Oblique Variations is an exhibition of paintings where monochrome abstraction adopts an approximate sensibility of mid-century modernism. Beginning from a place of reproduction, these works use hard edge form and flatness combined with a complex layering of process colours to consider cultural and art historical legacies. In these paintings, everyday details such as architectural and other forms are collected and stripped of their specific reference through a process of copying and simplifying. This process creates a distance from the original details causing the works to trade instead in echoes, shadows and absences, opening a space for interpretation in our contemporary moment.
