Puzzle Innovate Solve, 2019
Griffith Innovation Centre, Griffith University, Gold Coast

The Griffith Innovation Centre joins a community of entrepreneurs, accelerators, mentors who collaborate in the co-working space CoHort within the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct. The Innovation Centre is primed with smart technology and flexible furniture, which can be reconfigured for a range of events and workshops.

My artwork design for the Griffith Innovation Centre, Puzzle Innovate Solve, celebrates creative problem solving and abstract thinking. The mural design is based on a small collage maquette of abstracted elements that have been arranged and rearranged in a metaphor for visual problem solving. Painted paper cut outs have been moved around in the studio to create a final composition that is dynamic and balanced.

An important part of this design process includes making space for each design detail. Making space is an important metaphor for the Griffith Innovation Centre. This room must have multiple uses and be an open space. It is where different groups of people will piece together ideas to solve problems. It’s a space for new ideas and entrepreneurial thinking.

These ideas are reflected in the artwork where painted details overlap creating an expanded visual space within the mural design. The artwork promotes a kind of detached looking which encourages your mind to wander and enter a state of flow to find creative solutions. The abstract forms work together, they are layered in a complex ordering of translucent and opaque forms and they use complementary colours to resolve the composition and overall design.
